Day by day
Day 1 — Arrive Kigali, transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Met on arrival at Kigali International Airport by your private guide. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours on paved road, with an optional stop in Musanze or at a viewpoint over the Virungas. Check in during the afternoon, with a briefing on the following day's trek.
Day 2 — Gorilla trekking
An early breakfast ahead of the 7:00 a.m. briefing at Kinigi, where your family assignment is confirmed. The trek varies from under an hour to several hours of walking, followed by one hour with the gorillas. Return to the lodge to rest.
Day 3 — Transfer to Lake Kivu
A relaxed morning before a private transfer of roughly two hours through Rwanda's terraced hillsides and tea country. Check in during the afternoon, with the remainder of the day free.
Day 4 — Lake Kivu at leisure
A full day on the lake — a private boat excursion, a coffee cooperative visit, kayaking, or simply resting. Intentionally unstructured, as a counterpoint to the trekking day.
Day 5 — Transfer to Kigali, departure
Private transfer back to Kigali (3.5 to 4 hours depending on your lodge), with time for an optional stop at a genocide memorial or in the city before your onward flight.
Wildlife expectations
Gorilla sightings during a properly permitted, ranger-led trek are extremely reliable, though not contractually guaranteed — these are wild animals in their natural habitat. Golden monkeys and forest birdlife may be visible en route, though this itinerary doesn't include a dedicated golden monkey permit.
