Kigali International Airport has no direct flights from North America, South America, or most of Asia and Oceania. Travellers from these regions connect via Europe or the Middle East.
RwandAir, the national carrier, operates year-round direct flights from London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle, alongside Doha and Dubai. KLM flies direct from Amsterdam, Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, and Brussels Airlines operates seasonal routes.
By region
From North America: no direct flights. Typical routing connects via London, Paris, Amsterdam or a Gulf hub. Total journey time generally runs 16 to 20+ hours including the connection.
From Europe: RwandAir offers year-round direct service from London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle (approximately 8.5 hours from Paris), with KLM direct from Amsterdam.
From the Middle East: RwandAir and Qatar Airways both operate year-round direct flights from Doha; RwandAir also serves Dubai. These are commonly used by travellers connecting from Asia and Australia. RwandAir's Gulf services experienced a temporary suspension earlier in 2026 amid regional airspace disruptions, resuming 1 June 2026 — confirm current routing closer to travel given how quickly that situation has moved.
From elsewhere in Africa: RwandAir operates the region's most extensive network into Kigali, with direct flights from Johannesburg, Nairobi, Entebbe, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Addis Ababa and Cairo among others.
Ground transfers within Rwanda
Rwanda's paved road network is a genuine structural advantage over many East African safari destinations.
| From Kigali to | Drive time |
|---|---|
| Volcanoes National Park | 2.5–3 hours |
| Akagera National Park | ~2.5 hours |
| Lake Kivu (Rubavu) | ~3 hours |
| Nyungwe Forest | 5–6 hours |
Every itinerary we build uses private vehicles with a dedicated driver-guide — never shared group transport.
Domestic flights
A single scheduled domestic route connects Kigali with Kamembe (Cyangugu), near Nyungwe, operated by RwandAir — genuinely useful for reducing the otherwise lengthy road transfer on multi-destination itineraries. Private charter and helicopter transfers are also available for select routes where operationally arranged.
Planning your arrival day
Given the length of most international connections into Kigali, we generally recommend against scheduling gorilla trekking on the day immediately following arrival. An overnight in Kigali or at your first lodge, ahead of any strenuous activity, allows recovery from the journey and materially improves how the trek goes.
