This itinerary is built around Akagera's Big Five game drives — genuinely engaging for children of nearly any age — as the anchor experience, with gorilla trekking included only for family members who meet the age requirement, and alternative activities built in for those who don't.

Day by day
Day 1 — Arrive Kigali, transfer to Akagera
Private transfer of roughly 2.5 hours on paved road, arriving for an afternoon game drive.
Day 2 — Akagera game drives and boat safari
An early-morning drive — Akagera's best window for lion sightings in the northern savannah — and an afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema, consistently popular with children given close hippo and crocodile encounters from the safety of the boat.
Day 3 — Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
A longer transfer, typically routed via Kigali, of roughly five hours total, broken with a lunch stop.
Day 4 — Split-activity day
Family members 15 and over undertake gorilla trekking. Younger children and an accompanying adult can visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village near Kinigi for a hands-on introduction to traditional Rwandan life, or undertake the shorter golden monkey trek instead.
Day 5 — Transfer to Lake Kivu
A private transfer of roughly two hours to a lakeside lodge, with pool and beach access typically the arrival-day highlight for younger travellers.
Day 6 — Lake Kivu at leisure
A free day built around family-friendly activities — kayaking, swimming, or a gentle boat excursion.
Day 7 — Transfer to Kigali, departure
Return transfer, timed around your departure flight.
Why we build it this way
Rather than building a family trip around gorilla trekking and simply excluding younger children from part of it, this itinerary is designed from Akagera outward — an experience every family member can share — with gorilla trekking layered in as a bonus for those old enough, not the trip's sole justification.
Transfers
The Akagera-to-Volcanoes leg is the longest at roughly five hours; we build in a lunch stop and, for groups with very young children, can split it with a Kigali overnight.
