Golden monkey trekking

An endangered primate, a gentler walk, and roughly a fifteenth of the gorilla permit price.

Golden monkey trekking costs roughly USD 100 per person — a fraction of the gorilla permit — for a considerably gentler walk through Volcanoes National Park's bamboo zones.

Golden monkeys exist almost nowhere else on Earth outside the Virunga and Gishwati-Mukura ecosystems, making this a genuine rarity rather than a lesser consolation activity.

What makes them distinctive

Named for the vivid orange-gold fur across their back and flanks, golden monkeys are classified as endangered, their range restricted almost entirely to the bamboo forests of the Virunga Massif and, in smaller numbers, Gishwati-Mukura. Unlike the deliberate, ground-dwelling movement of gorilla families, golden monkeys are quick and constantly active, spending much of their time in the bamboo canopy in large, socially complex troops — a genuinely different wildlife-watching experience from gorilla trekking's slower pace.

The trek

Treks depart from Kinigi park headquarters like gorilla treks, though the walking is shorter and less demanding, largely confined to lower-altitude bamboo zones rather than steeper volcanic slopes. The monkeys' constant movement makes them visually striking and photographically harder than the comparatively stationary gorilla encounters.

Who should add it

  • Multi-day travellers wanting a lower-intensity second activity alongside a gorilla trek
  • Families whose group includes members under gorilla trekking's minimum age of 15 — golden monkey trekking has a lower threshold and gentler terrain
  • Repeat visitors to Volcanoes wanting a different primate experience
  • Birders and photographers drawn to the bamboo ecosystem generally

It pairs naturally with any Volcanoes stay of two nights or more, typically scheduled the day before or after a gorilla trek. No lodge change is required — every Volcanoes-area property offers equal access to both.

Common questions

How much does golden monkey trekking cost?

Approximately USD 100 per person for international visitors, issued by the Rwanda Development Board.

Is golden monkey trekking easier than gorilla trekking?

Yes, generally — golden monkeys inhabit lower-altitude bamboo forest zones, and the trek is typically shorter and less physically demanding.

Can children do golden monkey trekking?

The minimum age is lower than gorilla trekking's 15-year requirement, making it a more accessible primate experience for families. We confirm current age policy with the Rwanda Development Board during planning.

Where else can you see golden monkeys?

Golden monkeys are found almost exclusively in the Virunga Massif spanning Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC, and in smaller numbers in Rwanda's Gishwati-Mukura National Park.
