Rwanda sits within the Albertine Rift, a narrow highland corridor whose endemic bird species are found in almost no other part of the world.
Nyungwe Forest — the premier destination
Nyungwe holds over 300 recorded species including roughly 27 Albertine Rift endemics, a concentration that makes it East Africa's finest rainforest birding destination and a genuine draw independent of its primate reputation.
The Great Blue Turaco — Africa's largest turaco species, with striking blue, red and white plumage — is the flagship sighting, regularly encountered along the forest trails. The elusive Red-collared Mountain Babbler and the shy, ground-dwelling Grauer's Rush Warbler are prized specialities, alongside a rich sunbird community including the Regal, Purple-breasted and Rwenzori Double-collared Sunbirds. Nyungwe also hosts the rare Chapin's Flycatcher, a critically endangered endemic, and the Kivu Ground Thrush.
The Uwinka area, the park's central trailhead hub, offers some of the most productive and accessible birding. The road corridor overlooking the canopy provides an unusual vantage for spotting canopy species from above rather than craning upward through dense understory.
Volcanoes National Park
The park's bamboo forest, hagenia woodland and high-altitude moorland support over 200 recorded species, including 17 Albertine Rift mountain endemics. The Rwenzori Turaco, with vivid green and crimson plumage, is the most sought-after sighting. The Handsome Francolin, Archer's Ground Robin, Dusky Crimsonwing and Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird are further specialities regularly encountered on guided walks.
When to bird
Unlike gorilla trekking, which is most comfortable in the dry seasons, birding is often considered better during the rainy season, when migratory species pass through and overall activity increases. Travellers prioritising birding may want to weigh this against gorilla trekking's own seasonal preferences.
Akagera
A different habitat entirely — savannah, wetland and lake — supporting nearly 500 recorded species, including the rare shoebill stork around the papyrus swamps, a genuine prize for serious birders.
