Opened in 2012 on the shores of Lake Ihema, roughly six kilometres from Akagera's reception, Ruzizi was among the first true luxury properties in the park.
It remains its most centrally located high-end option — considerably closer to the main game-viewing circuits and boat safari departure point than Magashi's remote northern setting. Nine tents sit back from the lakeshore, shaded among palms and fig trees, connected by wooden walkways to a thatched reception and dining area and a deck extending over the water.
An eco-conscious build
The lodge is solar-powered and built with a deliberate low-impact ethos, with much of its furniture and decoration hand-crafted by local artisans and cooperatives — a tangible community and sustainability commitment rather than a general claim.
Rooms
Nine ensuite tents, each with hot and cold running water, a dressing area, a queen bed (or twin on request), and a shaded veranda furnished with campaign-style chairs. With a 20-guest maximum, Ruzizi offers a genuinely intimate scale.
Setting
Lake Ihema is Akagera's largest lake and the departure point for the park's signature boat safari — bringing guests close to hippo pods, Nile crocodiles and dense waterbird activity. Ruzizi's proximity to this, and to the central and southern game circuits, makes it a practical base for a full Akagera itinerary.
Who it suits
Travellers prioritising proximity to Akagera's most popular activity and central game-viewing areas; those drawn to genuinely local, artisan-crafted design over an architecturally engineered statement; and value-conscious luxury travellers, given more accessible pricing relative to Magashi.
